PNDC Process Sketches

I’m working on an identity system for my Type & Letterform class. I’ve chosen to rework the logo for PNDC, the Pacific Northwest DeLorean Club. I’m in the process of building a new site for them, and I thought it fitting that a new visual identity should be part of the equation.

Here are the process sketches I’ve created thus far.

These are the first round of sketches. There are two concepts here. The first image explores designs based on the open gullwing doors. I was trying to make them somewhat abstract rather than literal. I also explored some basic marks, trying to see if simple shapes could be successful.

The second image is a group of ideas that I had of making the mark more historic and rooted in heritage. I wanted it to look like an established organization, where there was a rich history.

These are refinements based on the 2 concepts I was going for. The top again is related to the gullwing doors, and the bottom is the heritage mark. After discussing the options with my instructor, we settled on the large mark on the second image. I’m in the process of taking this version into the production phase. Below are the sketches I completed yesterday, which will be digitized and refined.
